Developer Team Notes #11

Hey there, Smashers!
SMASH LEGENDS producer PK Lee here.

I would like to thank all our Smashers for your ongoing love and support of SMASH LEGENDS.
Your enthusiasm and feedback have been invaluable in our development and improvement.

This year, the SMASH LEGENDS team aimed to focus on the progression experience through Enchantments by removing Legend levels and introducing Engravings and Runes. However, the team has realized that this caused confusion among players, especially newcomers, who struggled to understand the progression system. We would like to apologize for any frustration this may have caused to everyone.

Today, we would like to share our upcoming system updates, which aim to make acquiring and leveling up Legends more intuitive. Our goal is to create an experience that welcomes new players while keeping everyone engaged over time.

Why System Changes Are Necessary

As mentioned, the current progression system in SMASH LEGENDS is overly complicated, making it unclear what players should focus on. So, the following below will be the key areas that need improvement.

  1. There are too many progression factors provided at once, making it difficult to know which one to prioritize.
  2. Legend acquisitions and progression use the same currency, creating a dilemma on Credit investments.
  3. Obtaining one’s desired Legend takes significant time and effort, making Credit investments feel burdensome.

Key Improvements

1. Legend Acquisition and Expansion

  • Better Trophy Road Rewards
Trophy Road offers 24 Legends as free rewards, allowing you to acquire and play more than half of the available Legends simply by playing the game. We intend this change to shift the focus from heavily investing in unlocking Legends to discovering and progressing the ones that suit your playstyle.
  • Separate Currency for Legend Acquisition
Currency to acquire and progress Legends is separated to resolve the dilemma of where to invest Credits. The newly added Legend Coins can be obtained through Trophy Road, giving players the ability to acquire desired Legends not available from Legend Trophy Road by playing the game.
  • Legend Road Improvements
Credits and Legend Coins are added to Legend Road rewards, encouraging players to try out different Legends and make them stronger, rather than focusing solely on one.
  • Matchmaking Improvements
The matchmaking system is changed to alleviate the stress of trying new Legends. Now, the matchmaking of normal games will be based on a Legend’s trophies, so players can explore new Legends without feeling overwhelmed.

2. Streamlined Progression System

  • Spell Acquisition Improvements
Spells have added depth and fun interactions, but the current system is confusing because obtaining Spells is too complicated. To make obtaining Spells easier, they will now be bound to Legends and purchased with Credits. This enables newcomers to gain a better understanding of the game by making it easier to obtain Spells and Abilities via Credits, as well as gradually experiencing more in-depth progression elements.
  • Legend Level
We initially removed Legend Levels to prevent the progression system from becoming overly complex as we introduced new features. However, we discovered that guiding progress step by step is more effective than reducing the number. Thus, Legend Levels have returned, allowing players to gradually unlock Spells and Abilities. We believe that by clearly indicating which elements players should be focusing on right now, they will gain a better understanding of them.

What’s Next?

Part of the system overhaul will roll out on December 3rd, with others, including Legend Level changes, coming in future updates. We understand these changes might take time to get used to, but we are committed to providing you with a better gaming experience.

Your feedback is invaluable, and we look forward to improving SMASH LEGENDS with you.
We wish you happy year-end holidays, and hope that you will continue to love and support SMASH LEGENDS in the coming year!

Thank you!
